Characters and their traits…you need positives and negatives.

I spent most of the day today developing my traits for my two new characters in book three. It still surprises me how traits can fit so perfectly within your story to make your characters function normally. Like real humans. (Like Us the ones who are far from perfect. )

I have learned through the process of writing that character traits need to align with your theme, and story. They need to create realism and conflict. I have to say I’ve never thought about them that way. I always thought hmm what about this trait. Then my story didn’t move or flow because there was no action from the traits I had picked. No conflict. You need both when choosing traits.

I dislike negative things. I don’t even watch the news because of it. I have to choose negatives for my characters. I have learned those are things that can be overcome throughout the story.

Perfect people annoy me. I need to be Extra careful when creating them…So I need to be vigilant in making sure my characters make mistakes, have flaws, react inappropriately… just like we do when family, emotion or something we are passionate about is challenged.

I love the quirks in people. It is so interesting to me. So I give my characters a signature move, piece of clothing, or something that makes them different, memorable. That is my aim with every page I write!

I love these small tips I find. I gets me to think outside the box. An do something different.

That is all I have tonight friends. Writing and life are a work in progress…(just like me)😉
