Write about your most epic baking or cooking fail.

I was thirteen years old and baking cookies for the very first time. I was serious, intent, following the recipe specifically. I had the dough done. Last step cook them. I got two trays in oven. Set timer. Then got busy with laundry and putting it away. I completely forgot them. Smoke filled the house. Fire alarms blaring. My younger siblings running in. As I pulled the burnt chocolate chip cookies out of the oven. Smoke billowing out the kitchen windows…My father who had just come home from work walked in grabbed a warm cookie off the tray and exclaimed “I like burnt ones better anyway!” he grabbed two more cookies and exited the kitchen. My siblings followed. I stared at my epic fail and smiled. It was just like my dad. He always saw the good in everything… even burnt cookies. I share the story now, it still makes me smile. My father passed in March. Not a day goes by that I don’t think of him and those burnt cookies. After that debacle the only time I burnt cookies was for him. He would take them fishing or hunting. None of his buddies would eat them. That was why he loved them so much….and because I made them for him.
